Advice from Active Navy to Selected Navy Reserve?

I'm about to complete my obligated term of service for the Navy and am considering going Selected Reserve. I got a chance to talk to my Recruiter but absolutely drew a blank when he asked me if i have any questions. I know i should be asking tons because lets face it, he's still a recruiter at heart, but all i knew to ask were the basics like when do we drill and what do we do for our 1 week a month bit. Any questions i should be asking that are important that people usually forget about? Any advice?

You should ask about the location of your unit. Be careful that you do not get assigned to a unit that will be difficult for you to commute to. Also, make sure that your unit has your rate so that you will not have to reclass. You will drill one weekend a month and you will have a two week annual training. The two week annual trainings can be done either at your home station or it can be done away. Sometimes it can be broken down depending on what you are doing. In addition, some annual training can be done in the form of schools or special training. You also might want to ask if the unit that you will be assigned to is on schedule for an activation. If that is the case, and you do not want to be activated, you might want to think twice. Another suggestion for you is to think about transferring to either the army reserve or the national guard. Even though they are different, you could still transfer and there are a lot more reserve and guard units located through out the US. Remember that once you sign for the reserves, you are obligated to attend drills. You can't just stop going because you do not like your unit or are tired of traveling on the weekends. It is a big committment, but it may be worth it because if you serve a total of 20 years, you can retire through the reserves and collect a pension when you reach age 60 - maybe sooner if you are activated but not much sooner. In addition, the reserves allows you to keep some benefits such as the BPX and commissary and your SGLI policy.
